Chang La Pass is one of the most important and scenic high-altitude mountain passes in Ladakh, located on the route connecting Leh to Pangong Lake. Situated at an elevation of over 5,000 metres above sea level, Chang La is among the highest motorable passes in the region and plays a vital role in connecting remote eastern Ladakh with the rest of the area. The pass is named after Changla Baba, a revered local saint, and a small temple dedicated to him can be seen near the summit.

The drive to Chang La Pass is both challenging and breathtaking. Steep climbs, sharp bends, and rugged mountain terrain make the journey adventurous, while panoramic views of snow-covered peaks, deep valleys, and wide open skies leave travellers in awe. Even during summer months, the pass often remains covered with snow, adding to its dramatic beauty. Colourful prayer flags fluttering in the cold mountain wind create a spiritual and peaceful atmosphere at the top.

Chang La holds strategic and military importance and is maintained by the Indian Army, which also runs a small canteen near the summit offering tea and basic refreshments to travellers. Due to its extreme altitude, oxygen levels are low, and visitors are advised to spend only a short time at the pass to avoid altitude-related discomfort.

The area around Chang La is largely barren, typical of Ladakh’s cold desert landscape, yet its raw beauty is striking. Clear weather offers excellent photography opportunities, with sweeping views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges. The best time to visit Chang La Pass is between May and September, when roads are accessible and weather conditions are relatively stable.

A visit to Chang La Pass is an unforgettable experience that combines adventure, natural beauty, and spiritual calm, making it a must-visit stop for anyone travelling to Pangong Lake or exploring eastern Ladakh.
