Tso Moriri Lake is one of the most pristine and breathtaking high-altitude lakes in Ladakh, located in the remote Changthang region of eastern Ladakh. Situated at an altitude of about 4,595 metres above sea level, this beautiful freshwater lake is surrounded by barren mountains, vast open plains, and snow-capped peaks, creating a truly surreal landscape. Unlike many popular tourist spots, Tso Moriri remains calm and less crowded, making it ideal for travellers seeking peace and untouched natural beauty.
The lake stretches for nearly 28 kilometres and changes colours throughout the day, shifting from deep blue to shades of turquoise and emerald as sunlight reflects off its crystal-clear waters. The stillness of Tso Moriri, broken only by gentle winds, adds to its spiritual and meditative atmosphere. The surrounding area is part of the Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve, which plays an important role in preserving Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem.
Tso Moriri is also a paradise for wildlife lovers and bird watchers. During the summer months, the lake becomes home to migratory birds such as bar-headed geese, Brahminy ducks, and black-necked cranes. The nearby Changthang plateau is inhabited by nomadic Changpa tribes, who live in traditional tents and depend on livestock like yaks and pashmina goats. Their simple lifestyle offers visitors a glimpse into Ladakh’s rich cultural heritage.
Due to its high altitude and remote location, travellers are advised to acclimatise properly before visiting Tso Moriri Lake. The best time to visit is between June and September, when roads are accessible and the weather is relatively stable. With its untouched charm, dramatic scenery, and tranquil environment, Tso Moriri Lake stands as a hidden gem of Ladakh, offering an unforgettable experience for nature lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers.
