Sarnath, located just a few kilometres from Varanasi, is one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. It is the place where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. The site is home to the famous Dhamek Stupa, ancient monasteries, and the Ashokan Pillar with the Lion Capital, which is now India’s national emblem. The Sarnath Archaeological Museum preserves many relics and sculptures from the Mauryan period. Surrounded by calm gardens and a peaceful atmosphere, Sarnath is a perfect place for meditation and learning about India’s spiritual history.
