Sinhagad Fort, Pune is one of the most famous and historically significant forts in Maharashtra, located about 30 km southwest of Pune city in the Sahyadri mountain range. Known earlier as Kondana Fort, Sinhagad is closely associated with the valor and sacrifice of the Maratha Empire, especially the legendary warrior Tanaji Malusare.

The fort gained its name “Sinhagad,” meaning Lion’s Fort, after the historic battle of 1670. Tanaji Malusare, a trusted commander of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, led a daring night attack to recapture the fort from the Mughals. Though Tanaji lost his life in the battle, his bravery ensured victory for the Marathas. Deeply moved by this sacrifice, Shivaji Maharaj is said to have remarked, “Gad aala, pan Sinha gela” (The fort is won, but the lion is lost).

Situated at an altitude of about 1,312 meters, Sinhagad Fort offers breathtaking panoramic views of Pune and the surrounding valleys. The fort complex includes important structures such as Tanaji Malusare’s memorial, Rajaram Maharaj’s samadhi, ancient water tanks, and fortification walls. The strong gates and strategic location reflect the military importance of the fort.

Today, Sinhagad Fort is a popular destination for history lovers, trekkers, and nature enthusiasts. The trek to the fort is especially popular during monsoon, when the surroundings turn lush green. Visitors also enjoy local food stalls serving pithla-bhakri, kanda bhaji, and curd, adding a local flavor to the experience.

A visit to Sinhagad Fort Pune offers a perfect blend of history, adventure, and natural beauty, making it one of the most cherished landmarks of the region.
