Tanglang La is one of the most iconic and highest mountain passes in Ladakh, located on the Leh–Manali highway. Sitting at an extreme altitude, Tanglang La is often counted among the highest motorable passes in the world and plays a crucial role in connecting Ladakh with Himachal Pradesh. Crossing this pass is a memorable experience for travellers exploring the vast Himalayan region.

The journey to Tanglang La is marked by long stretches of open roads, dramatic mountain scenery, and a sense of complete isolation. As travellers climb higher, the landscape transforms into a cold desert with barren hills, vast plateaus, and endless skies. The road passes through the stunning More Plains, which add to the beauty and uniqueness of the route. Sudden changes in weather, including strong winds and snowfall, are common at this altitude.

At the summit of Tanglang La, prayer flags flutter in the mountain breeze, creating a spiritual and peaceful atmosphere. The panoramic views from the top are breathtaking, offering sweeping sights of distant peaks and high-altitude plains. Due to low oxygen levels, visitors are advised to spend only a short time at the pass and avoid physical exertion.

Tanglang La holds strategic and logistical importance as it supports travel, trade, and military movement between Ladakh and the rest of India. Maintained by the Border Roads Organisation, the pass is usually open from late May to October, depending on weather conditions.

The area around Tanglang La is sparsely populated and supports limited wildlife adapted to extreme conditions. Its remote location and dramatic setting make it a favourite among adventure travellers, bikers, and photographers. A visit to Tanglang La is not just about reaching a high point but about experiencing the raw power, beauty, and silence of the Himalayas, making it a highlight of any Ladakh journey.
