Dhauli Shanti Stupa is a famous Buddhist peace monument located on the Dhauli Hills near Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Situated about 8 kilometers south of the city, this sacred site overlooks the calm waters of the Daya River. Dhauli is historically significant as it is believed to be the place where the legendary Kalinga War was fought in 261 BCE, a turning point that transformed Emperor Ashoka’s life and ideology.

After witnessing the massive bloodshed of the Kalinga War, Emperor Ashoka embraced Buddhism and adopted the principles of ahimsa, compassion, and peace. Dhauli Shanti Stupa stands as a symbol of this transformation and Ashoka’s commitment to spreading the message of non-violence across his empire. The white dome-shaped stupa was built in 1972 with the collaboration of the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangha of Japan and Indian Buddhist organizations.

The stupa is beautifully designed and decorated with stone panels depicting important events from the life of Gautama Buddha, along with symbols representing peace, harmony, and brotherhood. The open and serene surroundings enhance the spiritual atmosphere, making it an ideal place for meditation and reflection. Nearby, visitors can also see Ashokan rock edicts, which contain inscriptions promoting moral values, religious tolerance, and welfare of people.

Dhauli Shanti Stupa is not only a religious site but also an important historical landmark and popular tourist destination. The hilltop offers stunning views of the Daya River and the surrounding countryside, especially during sunrise and sunset. The peaceful ambiance attracts monks, pilgrims, history enthusiasts, and travelers from different parts of the world.
