Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, located inside the lush Jijamata Udyan (Byculla Zoo) in Mumbai, is the city’s oldest museum and one of its finest heritage landmarks. Originally opened in 1872 as the Victoria and Albert Museum, it was later renamed to honour Dr. Bhau Daji Lad, a renowned scholar, physician, and one of the key contributors who helped establish the museum. The building itself is an architectural masterpiece, designed in a beautiful Victorian and Palladian style with high ceilings, ornate columns, decorative tiles, and rich wooden interiors that take you back to 19th-century Bombay.
The museum showcases a wide and fascinating collection that highlights Mumbai’s social and cultural history. Its galleries display finely crafted clay models, traditional art forms, intricate dioramas, maps, vintage photographs, costumes, and metalwork that reveal how the city evolved over the centuries. One of the most striking features is the series of detailed clay models depicting the life and occupations of people in old Bombay. These handcrafted pieces show fishermen, craftsmen, traders, and everyday life in a way that feels real and engaging.
The museum also displays rare manuscripts, sculptures, and historic objects that explain Mumbai’s transformation from a cluster of islands into a thriving port city. Outside the museum, you can see the famous basalt elephant sculpture originally from Elephanta Island, which adds to the historic charm.
After an extensive restoration completed in 2008, the museum has become a vibrant cultural centre, hosting exhibitions, workshops, and educational programs. It beautifully blends heritage with creativity, making it a place where visitors can learn, explore, and connect with Mumbai’s past.
A visit to Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum is both enriching and relaxing—perfect for history lovers, families, students, and anyone who wants to experience the artistic and cultural heartbeat of Mumbai.
