Gaumukh Reservoir is one of the most peaceful and spiritually significant places inside the mighty Chittorgarh Fort. Considered the main water source of the fort, this natural tank is not only an engineering marvel but also a revered pilgrimage spot. The name “Gaumukh” comes from a stone cow’s mouth (gau = cow, mukh = mouth) carved into the rock, from which fresh water continuously flows into the reservoir throughout the year.
This sacred water body is believed to be fed by an underground spring, and its constant flow has kept the fort alive through many sieges and battles. Whether in times of peace or war, the Gaumukh Reservoir served as the fort’s lifeline, providing drinking water to the kings, soldiers, and residents of Chittor.
The serene surroundings of the reservoir make it a calming place to sit and reflect. On one side stands a small shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, while the water below reflects the ancient stone walls of the fort. The steps leading down to the water offer a beautiful vantage point for photography, especially during sunrise or sunset, when the light touches the reservoir with a golden glow.
Devotees often feed the fish and turtles that live in the reservoir, considering it an act of good fortune. Pilgrims and visitors also sprinkle the holy water on themselves for blessings. The atmosphere feels peaceful and powerful at the same time, making it one of the most spiritually rich spots inside the fort.
Gaumukh Reservoir is closely connected with the legends of Chittor, including stories of sacrifice, devotion, and survival. For travellers, it offers a combination of natural beauty, historical depth, and spiritual energy—making it a must-visit attraction while exploring Chittorgarh Fort.
