Pangong Lake, also known as Pangong Tso, is one of the most breathtaking natural attractions in the Ladakh region of India. Located at an altitude of about 4,350 meters above sea level, this high-altitude lake stretches across eastern Ladakh into Tibet, with nearly one-third of it lying in India and the rest extending into China. The name “Pangong Tso” comes from the Tibetan language, meaning “high grassland lake,” although the area around it is mostly barren and rugged.

What makes Pangong Lake truly special is its crystal-clear water and the way its colour changes throughout the day. Depending on the sunlight and weather, the lake appears in shades of deep blue, turquoise, green, and sometimes even grey. Surrounded by stark mountains and vast open skies, the scenery feels surreal and untouched, making it a favourite destination for nature lovers, photographers, and travellers seeking peace.

Despite being a saltwater lake, Pangong Tso freezes completely during winter when temperatures drop well below zero. In summer, the lake becomes accessible and attracts visitors from across the country. There is no aquatic life in the lake due to its saline nature, but the surrounding wetlands support migratory birds such as Brahminy ducks, bar-headed geese, and seagulls during warmer months.

Pangong Lake is also culturally and strategically important because of its proximity to the India-China border. Visitors are required to obtain inner line permits to reach the lake. Basic facilities are available near the lake, including camps and small eateries, but the area remains largely untouched to preserve its fragile ecosystem.

Overall, Pangong Lake offers a rare combination of raw Himalayan beauty, silence, and vastness. A visit here leaves travellers with unforgettable memories and a deep appreciation for Ladakh’s unique and pristine landscapes.
