Shankaracharya Temple, also known as Jyoteshwar Temple, is one of the most sacred and historically significant religious sites in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. Situated atop the Shankaracharya Hill at an altitude of about 1,000 feet above the city, the temple offers breathtaking panoramic views of Srinagar city, Dal Lake, and the surrounding Himalayan ranges. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is revered by devotees as well as history enthusiasts.

The origins of Shankaracharya Temple date back to ancient times. It is believed that the original structure was built during the reign of King Gopaditya in the 3rd century BC, though the present stone temple was later renovated. The temple is closely associated with Adi Shankaracharya, the great Hindu philosopher and saint, who is said to have visited this sacred spot during the 8th century AD while spreading the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta. In his honor, the hill and the temple were later named after him.

Architecturally, the temple reflects early Kashmiri stone architecture, with a circular sanctum and a simple yet spiritually powerful design. A small Shivling is enshrined inside the sanctum, where devotees offer prayers and seek blessings. The calm and spiritual atmosphere of the temple makes it an ideal place for meditation and reflection.

To reach the temple, visitors must climb around 240 stone steps, though a motorable road is also available partway up the hill. The journey itself is considered a spiritual experience. Shankaracharya Temple holds special importance during Mahashivratri, when a large number of pilgrims visit. Today, it stands not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of Kashmir’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage.
