The Daksha Mahadev Temple in Haridwar is one of the most important Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located in Kankhal, about 4 km from Har Ki Pauri, it holds deep mythological significance. According to Hindu scriptures, this is the place where King Daksha Prajapati, father of Goddess Sati, performed a great yajna (sacrifice). When Sati sacrificed herself after being insulted by her father for disrespecting Lord Shiva, Shiva became enraged and destroyed the yajna. Later, a temple was built here to honour Lord Shiva, hence the name Daksha Mahadev Temple.
The temple’s architecture is beautifully adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant colours. Within its premises, the Yajna Kund and Daksha Ghat on the banks of the Ganga River attract pilgrims from across India. The temple becomes especially vibrant during Mahashivratri, when thousands of devotees gather to offer prayers.
A visit to Daksha Mahadev Temple offers not only a divine experience but also a glimpse into one of Hinduism’s most profound legends, symbolizing love, devotion, and cosmic balance.
