Gangabal Lake is a sacred and picturesque high-altitude lake located at the foothills of Mount Harmukh in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. Situated at an elevation of about 3,570 meters, this alpine lake is one of the most important religious and natural landmarks of Kashmir. Surrounded by snow-covered peaks, green meadows, and glacial streams, Gangabal Lake offers breathtaking views and a peaceful Himalayan atmosphere.
The lake holds great religious significance for Kashmiri Pandits, who consider it a holy site dedicated to Lord Shiva. Every year, pilgrims undertake the Harmukh–Gangabal Yatra, a spiritual journey that combines devotion with adventure. The calm waters of the lake, reflecting Mount Harmukh, create a deeply spiritual and serene experience.
Gangabal Lake is fed by melting glaciers and mountain springs, which keep its waters clear and cold throughout the year. Near the main lake lies Nundkol Lake, another smaller alpine lake, together forming a scenic twin-lake region. During summer, the surrounding meadows are lush and green, dotted with wildflowers, while shepherds can be seen grazing their livestock in the nearby grasslands.
The trek to Gangabal Lake usually starts from Naranag village, passing through pine forests, alpine pastures, and rocky trails. This trek is popular among trekkers and nature lovers due to its scenic beauty and moderate difficulty level. Wildlife such as Himalayan birds and mountain animals can sometimes be spotted along the route.
Due to heavy snowfall, Gangabal Lake remains frozen during winter and is accessible mainly between June and September. With its spiritual importance, stunning landscapes, and peaceful surroundings, Gangabal Lake is a perfect destination for pilgrims, trekkers, and travelers seeking an untouched and soulful Himalayan experience in Kashmir.
