Nandankanan Zoological Park is one of the most famous wildlife attractions in Odisha and a major tourist destination near Bhubaneswar. Located about 20 kilometers from the city center, this unique zoo is set amidst dense forests and wetlands, providing a natural habitat for a wide variety of animals and birds. Established in 1960, Nandankanan was the first zoo in India to join the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).

The zoological park is home to more than 160 species of animals, reptiles, and birds, including several rare and endangered species. It is especially renowned for its white tigers, for which it gained international recognition. Visitors can also see lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceroses, giraffes, reptiles, and numerous species of deer and primates in spacious enclosures designed to resemble natural environments.

One of the highlights of Nandankanan Zoological Park is its open safari experience, which allows visitors to observe animals like lions, tigers, and herbivores in large, fenced forest areas. The park also features a reptile park, an aviary, and a botanical garden, adding to its educational and recreational value.

The zoo is located adjacent to Kanjia Lake, where visitors can enjoy boating while observing migratory birds during the winter season. Well-maintained pathways, shaded areas, and informative signboards make the park suitable for families, students, and nature lovers.

Beyond tourism, Nandankanan plays a crucial role in wildlife conservation, research, and breeding programs, especially for endangered species. Educational programs and awareness initiatives help promote environmental responsibility among visitors.

Surrounded by lush greenery and natural beauty, Nandankanan Zoological Park offers a perfect blend of wildlife exploration, learning, and relaxation. A visit here provides an unforgettable experience and highlights Odisha’s commitment to biodiversity conservation and eco-tourism.
