The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML), located inside the historic Teen Murti Bhavan complex in New Delhi, is one of India’s most important centres dedicated to modern Indian history. Originally the residence of independent India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, the building was later converted into a museum and research library to preserve his legacy, ideas, and contributions to the nation.

The museum section of NMML offers a detailed journey through Nehru’s life—from his childhood and education to his leadership during the freedom struggle and his role in shaping independent India. Visitors can explore Nehru’s personal rooms, study, and living spaces, which are preserved much like they were during his lifetime. The exhibits include photographs, letters, diaries, speeches, personal belongings, gifts received from world leaders, and rare archival material that offer a deep insight into his personality, vision, and political career.

One of the highlights is the “Life and Works of Nehru” gallery, which uses photographs, documents, and visual displays to narrate his role in building India’s democratic institutions, promoting scientific progress, and fostering international friendship. The beautifully maintained Teen Murti Bhavan gardens, open lawns, and pathways add to the peaceful atmosphere, making the visit both informative and relaxing.

The library is one of the finest research centres in Asia for modern Indian history. It houses thousands of books, manuscripts, newspapers, journals, and archival collections that attract scholars, historians, and researchers from across the world. The library also organizes lectures, seminars, and exhibitions related to India’s political and cultural development.

The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library is more than a museum—it is a rich cultural institution that keeps alive the values, leadership, and historical contributions of Jawaharlal Nehru. It is a must-visit destination for students, history lovers, researchers, and anyone interested in India’s journey as a nation.
