Surkanda Devi Temple is one of the most sacred and scenic temples in the hills of Uttarakhand. Located near Kaddukhal on the Mussoorie–Dhanaulti road, this ancient shrine is dedicated to Goddess Surkanda, a powerful form of Goddess Parvati. The temple sits at an elevation of around 2,700 metres, offering breathtaking 360-degree views of the Himalayan peaks, the Doon Valley, and the dense forests of the Saklana Range.
Reaching Surkanda Devi Temple is an experience in itself. The journey begins from Kaddukhal, from where visitors start a 1.5 to 2 km steep trek. The path is surrounded by tall deodar, oak, and rhododendron trees, making the walk refreshing and scenic. As you climb higher, cool winds and misty slopes add a sense of adventure and peace to the journey. Many travellers say the trek feels spiritual, with nature guiding them towards the temple.
At the top, the temple’s traditional architecture, colourful flags, and calm environment create a deeply spiritual atmosphere. The idol of Goddess Surkanda is beautifully decorated, and devotees come here to pray for protection, blessings, and prosperity. The temple is especially famous during Ganga Dussehra, when thousands of visitors participate in rituals and enjoy the festive energy.
One of the major highlights of Surkanda Devi Temple is the stunning Himalayan view. On clear days, you can see peaks like Nanda Devi, Bandarpunch, and Swargarohini, along with endless forest-covered ridges. The sunrise and sunset from the temple are unforgettable.
Whether you are a pilgrim, a trekker, or a nature lover, Surkanda Devi Temple offers a perfect blend of spirituality, natural beauty, and adventure, making it one of the must-visit attractions near Mussoorie and Dhanaulti.
