India Gate, located in the heart of New Delhi, is one of India’s most iconic landmarks and a powerful symbol of national pride. Designed by British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, this magnificent 42-metre-tall sandstone arch was completed in 1931. It was built as a war memorial to honour the 84,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives during World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. The names of more than 13,000 soldiers are inscribed on its walls, making the monument a solemn reminder of India’s military history.
Set along the ceremonial Rajpath, India Gate is surrounded by lush lawns that attract thousands of visitors every day. At the base of the arch lies the Amar Jawan Jyoti, added in 1972 after the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. This eternal flame burns in memory of the unknown soldier and stands as a tribute to India’s brave martyrs. The structure consists of a reversed rifle capped with a soldier’s helmet, surrounded by four eternal flames.
From India Gate, visitors can enjoy views of the Rashtrapati Bhavan and Parliament House, adding to the charm of this historic boulevard. The wide walkways, fountains, and open gardens make it an ideal spot for evening strolls, photography, and picnics.
