Purana Qila, also known as the Old Fort, is one of Delhi’s oldest and most remarkable historical landmarks. The present structure was largely rebuilt by the Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century, although the area is said to be the site of the legendary city of Indraprastha mentioned in the Mahabharata.
As you enter the massive gates of Purana Qila—Bada Darwaza, Talaqi Darwaza, and Humayun Darwaza—you immediately sense the architectural grandeur of the medieval era. The fort’s thick walls, soaring bastions, and wide ramparts reflect a blend of Mughal and Afghan styles. Inside the complex, you’ll find the beautiful Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque, a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture featuring intricate stonework, graceful arches, and a stunning prayer hall built by Sher Shah Suri.
One of the highlights of Purana Qila is the Sher Mandal, an elegant two-storey octagonal tower made of red sandstone. This structure is historically significant as the place where Mughal emperor Humayun is believed to have spent time studying the stars and where he tragically fell to his death.
