The Sheesh Mahal, meaning "Palace of Mirrors," was built during the reign of Maharaja Man Singh in the 16th century. It was a private chamber for the royal family, especially the queens who couldn’t step out after sunset.
The walls and ceilings are beautifully decorated with thousands of tiny mirror tiles, brought from Belgium. The Maharaja wanted his queen to feel the beauty of stars and moonlight even while indoors. A single candle could light up the entire hall through these reflective pieces.
This incredible use of optical illusion and artistry makes Sheesh Mahal a true symbol of Rajput grandeur.
Also known as the Mirror Palace Jaipur, the Sheesh Mahal is a mix of Islamic and Rajput architectural styles. The ceilings and walls are adorned with:
Mirror mosaics
Coloured glass
Floral carvings
Precious stones
One of its most famous features is the "magic flower" carved in marble – which reveals 7 different images depending on how you view it.
Even today, visitors are left awestruck by the light reflections and detailed craftsmanship that have stood the test of time.
Many tourists confuse Sheesh Mahal at Amber Fort with Sheesh Mahal at Nahargarh Fort. While both are historical and beautiful, they are entirely different locations:
Sheesh Mahal Amber Fort: The original and most famous mirror palace in Jaipur.
Sheesh Mahal Nahargarh Fort: A recently developed luxury dining area within the fort, not a historical structure.
So if you want to see the real centuries-old mirror work, head to Amber Fort's Sheesh Mahal.
